In 1973, the Hong Kong government approved entry of the first foreign domestic helpers. Filipino helpers quickly became the most preferred group of domestic helpers in the territory, a status that was no doubt assisted by Filipino helpers’ strong English language ability. And while helpers from Indonesia had at one point surpassed Filipino helpers as the largest population of domestic helpers in Hong Kong, Filipino helpers have recently taken back that distinction.
